Japanese knotweed is known to be capable of causing considerable damage to hard surfaces and can also adversely affect structures. It should be clear that damage to well-built dwellings or buildings is extremely unusual but is not unknown, typically being caused by building a new structure directly over existing knotweed areas without appropriate remedial work taking place. The most common impacts of Japanese knotweed are considered to be an adverse impact on the environment, an adverse impact on the amenity of the land (gardens, landscaped areas, etc.), and an adverse impact on hard surfaces. It should also be noted that the presence of Japanese knotweed typically complicates a construction plan, but a bespoke Knotweed Management Plan may be able to minimise many of the problems and costs associated with the presence of knotweed.
